Jordan 5 Retro Black University Blue (2026)
Released Jun 20, 2026
The Air Jordan 5 “Black/University Blue” is officially back for 2026, and for longtime Jordan collectors, this one carries a little more weight than your average Saturday release. Originally released back in 2006, this colorway has been gone for 20 years, making the 2026 return a true anniversary pair. The original version retailed for $145 and came in the classic Jumpman face box, a detail a lot of older collectors still remember. Fast forward to June 20, 2026, and the modern retro returns with a new retail price of $220. That price jump alone tells the story of how much the sneaker market has changed over the last two decades, but the bigger question is whether this pair still holds the same energy in today’s Jordan climate.
The 2026 Air Jordan 5 “Black/University Blue” keeps the same overall formula that made the original stand out. The upper is predominantly black nubuck, not long-haired suede, which gives the shoe a cleaner and slightly more structured look in hand. The University Blue hits are what make the shoe pop, showing up on the inner lining, outsole tint, lace lock detail, and the Jumpman branding on the back heel. You also get the classic Jordan 5 webbing on both the medial and lateral sides, visible Air units on both sides of the midsole, and the translucent outsole that gives the shoe that icy finish. Around the panels, the white contrast stitching breaks up the black upper and gives the shoe more definition without making it too loud. The tongue keeps things more subtle with a black Jumpman, and the shoe comes factory-laced with black laces, keeping the overall look clean, dark, and wearable.
Seeing these in hand for the first time, the shoe definitely gives off that “collector pair” feeling, especially if you remember the 2006 release or always wanted a pair but never had access to one. The colorway has that UNC connection without being fully covered in University Blue, which makes it easier to wear than some louder Carolina-inspired Jordans. That said, this is where the conversation gets interesting. Even though the Air Jordan 5 “Black/University Blue” is a coveted retro with a 20-year gap behind it, I do not think it will have the same mass appeal some people might expect. Jordan 5s have a loyal audience, but they do not always move like Jordan 1s, 3s, 4s, or 11s. At $220, some buyers may love the history, but others may wait to see if pairs sit, hit a discount, or eventually land in stores below retail. For the New Release tab, this is not an outlet find or a bargain rack pickup. This is a fresh Jordan Brand release with history, nostalgia, and a clean colorway behind it. The question now is whether the 2026 market treats it like a must-cop anniversary retro, or if patience saves pockets once again.
